Perkins ran for 194 yards and two touchdowns, including a backbreaking 67-yard scoring run late in the fourth quarter to seal No. 14 UCLAs 40-35 victory over No. 11 Kansas State in the Alamo Bowl on Friday. Kansas State fought back from a 31-6 halftime deficit, cutting the margin to 34-28 after Jake Waters plunged in from a yard out with 4:54 remaining. UCLA (10-3), though, had an answer. Faced with a 2nd-and-13 at its own 33 following a false start penalty, Perkins burst through a huge hole off the left side of the line untouched and strolled the rest of the way for the score. The ensuing two-point conversion was unsuccessful. Waters hit Tyler Lockett for a 29-yard touchdown to claw Kansas State (9-4) within 40-35, but an onside kick was recovered by the Bruins. UCLA had a 331-31 advantage in rushing yards. Hundley, in what most likely was his last collegiate game, completed 12-of-24 passes for 136 yards with a touchdown and added 96 yards and two scores on the ground for the Bruins, who have won consecutive bowl games for the first time since winning eight in a row from 1983-1991. Linebacker Deon Hollins registered three of UCLAs seven sacks. Waters was 31-of-48 for 338 yards with two touchdown passes to Lockett, who had 13 catches for 164 yards for Kansas State, which was seeking its third 10- win campaign over the last four seasons. Curry Sexton had 10 receptions for 104 yards in defeat. The Bruins outgained the Wildcats 312-104 in the first half en route to their 31-6 cushion, but Kansas State put together a 17-play, 75-yard march to start the third and begin its comeback attempt. Kansas State moved the chains a trio of times on third down, picked up a fourth down conversion and Waters hit Lockett for a 3-yard score on a 4th-and- goal. Waters also found Lockett for the two-point conversion and get the Wildcats within 31-14. Ryan Mueller ripped the ball away from Perkins on the second play of UCLAs next touch and Dakorey Johnson made the recovery. The Wildcats capitalized on the turnover when DeMarcus Robinson found the end zone from two yards out, whittling the gap to 31-21 late in the third. Hundley appeared bottled up on a 3rd-and-11 before breaking free along the right sideline for a 40-yard gain, setting up Kaiimi Fairbairn for a 44-yard field goal. The Wildcats were ready to punt the ball back to the Bruins on a 4th-and-11 from the UCLA 47 with under seven minutes to go, but UCLA committed a substitution infraction. The penalty made fourth down more manageable and Waters fired an 18-yard completion to Sexton. He found Sexton for a 12-yard reception on the next play and Waters finished off the trek with his 1-yard TD keeper. Hundley ran in from 10 yards out to concluded UCLAs opening series and following a Kansas State three-and-out, Fairbairn made it 10-0 with a 27-yard field goal. The Wildcats moved the sticks just once before punting again and Hundley broke off a 28-yard touchdown run down the left sideline for a 17-0 spread late in the first. Matthew McCrane split the uprights from 47 and 29 yards, respectively, on consecutive Kansas State possessions to pull the Wildcats within 17-6, but the Bruins found the end zone twice more prior to halftime. Perkins ran for a 32-yard score and Hundley tossed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Devin Lucien in the waning moments of the half. "Conditions are quite critical with the high temperatures and the moisture," FIS mens race director Guenter Hujara said. A key problem is the Hausbergkante, the lower section of the 3.3-kilometre Streif course which is one of the marquee parts of the downhill race. Organizers have been transporting 1,800 tons of snow down from the mountains by helicopter to get the section covered. "Snow on the race line for the downhill is there, enough snow," said Hujara, adding that now freezing temperatures were needed to make the surface hard enough. "Well have to wait for how the weather behaves," Hujara said. "We need cooler temperatures and clear skies." Organizers have already prepared an alternative bottom section to the downhill course, using the final part of the slalom course instead. "We have not an easy problem to solve," race chief Peter Obernauer said. With Tuesdays first downhill training having already been cancelled last week and Wednesdays second session now doubtful after days of rain and fog, organizers could be forced to change the schedule. Hujara said the organizers main priorities are with the downhill and the slalom, and that they might have to sacrifice the other two races. "If we have no good conditions we will not damage the race course," Hujara said about Wednesdays training. "We will then focus on one good training Thursday." Organizers are reluctant to open the event as scheduled with the super-G because that race also uses the downhill slope and could severely damage the course. Alternatively, the FIS could swap Fridays races with Sundays slalom, which is on a different piste. And, if no downhill training is possible before Friday, the super-G and the combined event will be called off. The slalom would then take place on Friday, with the downhill training and the race on the following two days. The mild temperatures in central Europe have been affecting the Alpine skiing calendar for the last three weeks. Several races in Germany, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy have been cancelled or moved to other resorts.
